I DO or I DON’T: Harry Potter-Themed Weddings! (I Say DON’T Go There!)

Written on July 25, 2011 by Cody Whitefoord

Look, Im wild about Harry Potter. Ill happily admit to being a 30-something who kind of has a thing for a teenage wizard. (Yes, Ive read all the books. Twice, in fact.)

Hedwigs saying, Its a DONT! with her eyes.

But much like this blogger, I dont think Harry and Hermione (or Ron or Neville or Malfoy) have any place at a wedding.

Yes, people are doing this! Invitations that look like a Hogwarts acceptance letter. A Hogwarts Express train ride to the venue. A reception hall set up like the wizarding school with the four house tables for guests. Seating cards set alongside a Sorting Hat. The groom in Harry Potter cufflinks and a Gryffindor tie. It goes on. (And on and on.) Can you picture it?

And does it sort of look like a 10-year-olds birthday party to you, too?

If you MUST get a Harry Potter-themed cake topper or whatever, fine. (I actually think that ones super-cute.) There are ways to way subtly incorporate any theme into a wedding. But the key is SUBTLE! Add more than one or two Harry Potter-y elements, and you risk turning your entire wedding into a cheesy, magical mess.

Plus, the non-Potter-fans at your wedding are going to be scratching their heads all night. (What the … Hufflepuff?) And in 50 years, are you really going to want to explain to your grandkids why grandpa has a lightening bolt scar in your wedding pictures?

To quote my friend Krystin: Harry Potter weddings? Avada kedavra!

Are Harry Potter-themed weddings an I DO or an I DONT? Would you incorporate Harry Potter in your wedding? Or any theme, for that matter?
